Eat out and Eat Well with new public health scheme

Our Environment and Regulation service have introduced a new public health award and three local organisations have already achieved gold.

'Eat Out Eat Well' is a voluntary award for businesses providing healthy food choices and options on their menus and aims to give consumers healthier choices when eating out.

The scheme has three levels, bronze, silver, and gold, and Paultons Park, Walhampton School in Lymington, and Forres Sandle Manor School in Fordingbridge are the first to achieve the gold award.

Cllr Barry Rickman, Leader, said, "The Eat Out Eat Well scheme is just one small piece in the jigsaw of tackling obesity, now recognised as the largest public health challenge of our times. This scheme aims to offer consumers healthier choices when eating out and I would encourage more of our New Forest businesses to get involved".

To be part of the scheme, businesses must meet two minimum requirements; achieve a food hygiene rating of three or better, and provide healthy food options within their menu to meet the bronze standard minimum.  Each of the three gold award businesses were initially assessed against a checklist for the nutritional standard of the food they serve.
